Wine Market In China
China, once a developing country which has now emerged as a newly industrial nation, has become an engine of global economy, with ever-increasing opportunities for foreign suppliers and investors, the wine industry is one of the fastest-growing sectors. Wine consumption soared incredibly 68 percent between 1994 and 2000, while the world consumption of wine increased by a mere 6.5 percent over the same period. It is estimated that China will consume 800,000 tons of wine by 2010.

Attractive China Market
---------- Wine Importation In China

China's wine import experienced a fast increase in the past two years as the import tariff lowered from 65% to 14% after China's accession to the World Trade Organization. Chinese wine imports increased by nearly 50 per cent in 2003. Due to high import duties previously applied, which amount to around 150 per cent plus consumption and value added taxes, imported wines were prohibitively expensive for most Chinese consumers in the past. Now the reduction of the tariff has opened the floodgates to a deluge of foreign wine producers, resulting in increased competition, which in turn has triggered a price war among domestic wine producers. Experts say that Chinese wine imports in 2010 will reach 400,000 tons, decupling that of 2003.
